MacBook Air can now use two external monitors plus its own

The new M4 MacBook Air solves a key problem in the series and now supports up to two external monitors – and there are no restrictions on the M3 version.

The new MacBook Air brings significant improvements to multi-display users. While the previous M3 models supported two monitors, both monitors were only available when the MacBook Air's lid was closed.

So while users gain a wider screen space for two external monitors, they lose the use of the MacBook Air built-in monitor. Now, the M4 MacBook Air supports two displays with a maximum resolution of 6K, as well as a built-in 13.6-inch or 15.3-inch screen.

6K resolution is also an improvement. The previous models did support two external monitors, but only one could reach 6K resolution.

Another one can drive to a maximum 5K resolution with a refresh rate of 60Hz. Any screen can run at 4K resolution with a refresh rate of 144Hz.

In contrast, the current M4 MacBook Pro launched in October 2024 has the same 6K dual monitor option as the MacBook Air without closing the lid. But the MacBook Pro with an M4 Max processor can drive up to three 6K monitors (refresh rate of 60Hz), and one 4K monitor (refresh rate of 144Hz).
