KDE Weekly Update: Sharper Cursors, Better Thumbnails, and a Plethora of Improvements
Mar 14, 2025 am 09:22 AMKDE developer Nate Graham summarized the latest developments in the KDE ecosystem in this week’s blog post. KDE developers have another busy week, bringing exciting new features, UI improvements and critical bug fixes to Plasma desktop environments and KDE applications. This week’s update focuses on enhancing the user experience with clearer visuals, extended features and smoother performance.
Major improvements:
- Plasma 6.2.0 introduces a SVG-based cursor theme, achieving a significant visual upgrade. This allows topics like Breeze Light and Breeze Dark to display clear, scalable cursors regardless of size. Currently this implementation does not use the Hyprcursor system, but KDE developers are considering using it as a cross-desktop standard soon.
- Starting with KDE Frameworks 6.6, KDE applications now support cross-desktop thumbnail specifications, improving cross-desktop compatibility. This means that any compatible thumbnail generators already present on the system, such as STL file thumbnail generators, will integrate seamlessly with KDE applications. This is especially beneficial for users who use 3D models or 3D printing.
New features to enhance workflows:
- Elisa Music Player 24.12.0 has been updated conveniently, displaying the total duration of playlist songs in the footer, allowing you to quickly understand how you listen.
- Plasma users now have the option to hide the clock on the login and lock screens of Plasma 6.2.0.
- The Plasma Pager widget is more flexible, allowing users to disable window profiles for a cleaner look and focus on virtual desktops.
- Breeze Light and Dark Plasma styles now respect system-wide accent colors, resulting in a more unified and visually appealing desktop experience. This is especially effective when using a Breeze Twilight global theme, which now fully supports accent colors.
UI improvements and bug fixes:
In addition to the main new features, KDE developers are working hard to improve the user interface and fix bugs:
- Elisa (24.08.0) and Filelight (24.12.0) now reliably remember windows to maximize state, geometry, and size, thus maintaining consistency between startups and improving user experience.
- Fixed a visual failure that caused blurred corners of the rounded corner title bar when using background blur, which is especially noticeable in applications such as Konsole (Plasma 6.2.0).
- Multiple bug fixes resolve issues in system settings, improving accessibility for auto-rotate settings and column header sorting in system monitors.
- VLC and Qt workarounds enhance the response speed of media playback controls and prevent overlap of widgets in Plasma's Widget Explorer.
- Plasma 6.2.0 fixed the "Copy Time/Date to Clipboard" feature of the digital clock widget on Wayland, solving a wider range of clipboard issues.
- Due to a fix for Plasma 6 porting error, the Small Fonts settings (the "Fonts" page of the system settings) are now available again.
Performance optimization brings a smoother experience:
A lot of efforts have been made to improve performance and efficiency:
- Plasma 6.1.4 solves the issue of causing significant frame rate drops on systems with hybrid Intel NVIDIA GPU settings.
- Wayland users can now drag and drop items into the Plasma panel in autohide mode, which is the same behavior on the X11.
- Changing the language in the System Settings Regions and Languages ??page is now more reliable, even if the distribution may not be fully configured.
- Search in Plasma 6.1.5 is faster and more efficient.
- System performance improvements when using ICC color profiles in Plasma 6.2.0.
- Now video players are more likely to utilize KWin's direct scan output function, thus saving power and reducing the use of system resources.
- The reliability of the Plasma global menu feature on Wayland is improved, especially in menus exported from Electron applications such as VSCode.
