New York Times Connections game tips and answers (Friday, April 18)

Hello everyone, connecters! Happy weekend!

I mentioned that this is WrestleMania weekend the other day, so today and tomorrow I may be watching a lot of wrestling matches. It should be very interesting! Oh, of course, I will definitely watch the latest episode of The Last of Us tomorrow. I wrote an article about the key changes made from The Last of Us 2 in Season 1 and why I thought it was a good decision (although I had some reservations initially):

The first major change in Season 2 of The Last of Us appears to be to protect Abby’s cast

I'm not worried at all about the next episode?

Aside from that, I don't know what I'm going to do this weekend because I'm alone. Maybe I should have a brunch for myself? Maybe having a casual gaming party on Discord (I have a new microphone to test after all)?

I can finally start the long-planned newsletter! I think I have a great logo idea. I need to find a designer to help me with the production because I would rather pay someone than use generative AI.

Or maybe I should catch up with some work tasks that I’m behind. oops.

Before we started, I had already set up a discussion group on Discord for The New York Times Connections and this column. We have a great little community there and we chat with more than just New York Times games. Everyone who joined was very friendly. This is a fun gathering place.

This is also the best way to give me any feedback about columns, especially if I rarely make mistakes (!) as I don't read much of a comment or tweet.

Today's New York Times Connections' tips and answers are coming on Saturday, April 19.

How to play Connections

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You will receive a new puzzle every midnight. You can play on the New York Times website or on the gaming app.

You will see a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four four-character groups by finding out the connections between them. These groups can be such as items you can click on, the name of the study participant, or words that start with a body part, etc.

There is only one solution for each puzzle, and you need to be careful when dealing with words that may fit multiple categories. You can mess up words and maybe help you see the connection between them.

Each group has a color code. The yellow group is usually the easiest to solve, the blue and green are centered, and the purple group is usually the most difficult. Purple groups usually involve word games.

Select the four words you think are put together and press Submit. If you guess wrong, you will lose a life. If you are close to getting a correct group, you may see a message telling you that you are only one word away from correct, but you still need to find out which word needs to be exchanged.

If you make four mistakes, the game is over. Let's make sure this doesn't happen with the help of some tips, and if you're really working on it, then today's Connections answer. Like Wordle and other similar games, it's easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

If you have a New York Times All Access or Games subscription, you can access the Connections archive for the publication. This includes all the Connections games before, so you can go back and play any game you missed.

Apart from the initial 60 games or so, if you need it, you should be able to find my tips via Google! Just click here and add the game date you need to the search query.

What is the Connections prompt today?

Scroll slowly! After each of the prompts for today’s Connections groups, I’ll reveal what these groups are, without telling you immediately which words belong to them.

Today's 16 words are...

  • HOT
  • DEVIL
  • GOLDEN
  • INTRO CLASS
  • LAB
  • BULLY
  • SANDY
  • ADDRESS
  • DRY
  • CANNABIS
  • LECTURE
  • JAMES BOND
  • TALK
  • CHOW
  • VAST
  • SPEECH

And today the prompt for the Connections group is:

  • Yellow Group - Transfer information to the audience
  • Green Groups – Like drought and barren
  • Blue Group – Our Best Friend, maybe
  • Purple Group – Business hours like web page errors and never-closed businesses

What is the Connections group today?

Need more help?

Note: We start to enter the spoiler area .

Today's Connections group is...

  • Yellow Group – Oral Speech
  • Green Group - Adjective of Desert
  • Blue Group – Informal Dog Breed
  • Purple Group - Denoted in Three digits

What is the answer to Connections today?

Spoiler warning! Don't scroll down the page until you're ready to find out today's Connections answer.

This is your last warning!

Today's Connections answer is...

  • Yellow Group - Oral Speech (ADDRESS, LECTURE, SPEECH, TALK)
  • Green group - adjectives of desert (DRY, HOT, SANDY, VAST)
  • Blue Group – Informal Dog Breeds (BULLY, CHOW, GOLDEN, LAB)
  • Purple Group—Denoted in three digits (CANNABIS, DEVIL, INTRO CLASS, JAMES BOND)

There is no perfect game this time, but my current winning streak is 53 wins. This is my performance:

?????
?????
?????
?????
?????

My brain immediately thought of something represented by numbers - INTRO CLASS is 101 and JAMES BOND is 007. CANNABIS is 420,...I had no idea at that time. Hate. Thankfully, a few seconds later, DEVIL caught my attention. That existence is represented by 666.

When I noticed that those were purple, I made a "yess" sound. This week is long, okay?

I think LAB, LECTURE, SPEECH and TALK might give me yellow, but I'm missing one. Replacing LAB with TALK will succeed.

After that, I quickly discovered green. I think BULLY, LAB and GOLDEN refer to dog breeds, so I'm very confident in this connection. I haven't heard of CHOW in this context before, and I've only heard of Chow Chow until now.

Anyway, I then got the blue and green for the latest win. BULLY may be an American Bulldog or Bulldog, LAB is a Labrador Retriever, and GOLDEN is a Golden Retriever.

That's all about Connections clues and answers today. If you need it, be sure to check out my blog tomorrow for tips and solutions for Sunday’s game.

P.: I have some metal songs that are always in my pocket and ready to add to the recommendation. I know these are not for everyone, but I have to clean them out of my RAM by writing about them. The second song should be released tomorrow unless something in Sunday's game inspired me to go in a different direction.

One of the most popular rock club songs of the century to date is Soil's "Halo". It's very catchy, but not suitable for the faint-hearted. I used to go to rock clubs with my friends almost every week and we always hear this song. In such a venue, it is guaranteed to fill the dance floor. If it fits your musical taste, here is a great song for dancing:
