Summer Game Fest 2025 Welcomes Back Nintendo After Two-Year Hiatus
With just over a week until Summer Game Fest (SGF) 2025 kicks off, excitement is building among gaming enthusiasts. On May 28, SGF shared via Twitter (X) that this year’s event will feature a record number of over 60 partners, marking the return of gaming heavyweight Nintendo after a two-year absence.
Nintendo last participated in SGF two years ago, choosing instead to concentrate on its dedicated Nintendo Direct presentations. This year, however, Nintendo is back, particularly in light of the upcoming launch of its highly anticipated next-generation handheld console, Switch 2. While the company has confirmed its involvement in SGF, it remains unclear whether they will host a full-scale stage presentation. Fans can look forward to gaining further insights into Switch 2 and potentially viewing trailers for upcoming games slated for release on the device.
Possible Showcases at Xbox Games Showcase: Everwild and State of Decay 3
Also set to take center stage is Microsoft’s Xbox division, which has consistently presented at SGF for multiple years. As part of the festivities, Xbox will once again deliver its annual Xbox Games Showcase over the weekend. Alongside anticipated releases like the new Call of Duty, Gears of War: E-Day and Reloaded, and Outer Wilds 2, which will each have their own dedicated Direct sessions, fans are hoping for updates on two other titles.
One such title is State of Decay 3, initially unveiled at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2020. Four years later, at the 2024 showcase, a cinematic trailer featuring rendered in-game assets was released, hinting at substantial advancements in development. Xbox CEO Phil Spencer expressed his enthusiasm for the series during a February 2025 interview with Xbox Era, noting, "Yeah, State of Decay is just one of the franchises I love back from the original one, so that one stays on the board. I do think the work that Double Fine’s doing and how Tim kind of solicits feedback from the team."
Additionally, Spencer provided an update on Rare’s eagerly awaited new IP, Everwild, which was first introduced in 2019. Described as offering "a unique and unforgettable experience in a natural and magical world," Spencer mentioned witnessing the team's progress during a recent visit to Rare. He remarked, "And the other one, I’ll say because I was recently out at Rare. It’s nice to see the team with Everwild and the progress that they’re making."
These recent developments and the buzz surrounding these titles suggest they might feature prominently at this year’s Xbox Games Showcase. However, no official announcements have been made confirming their inclusion.
Viewers can catch the Xbox Games Showcase 2025 live on June 8 at 10:00 AM PT / 1:00 PM ET across Xbox’s official YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook channels. Following the showcase, there will be an immediate follow-up with The Outer Worlds 2 Direct.
