How To Solve Strands
The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is an adaptation of the traditional word search. It’s currently in beta, meaning it will stay around only if enough people engage with it daily.
A fresh Strands challenge is available each day. The puzzle presents a six by eight grid filled with letters. Your task is to identify a set of words sharing a common trait, with a hint provided about this theme. Once you discover a theme word, it stays marked in blue.
Additionally, you must locate a special word known as a spangram. This word reveals the shared characteristic of the others. The spangram connects two opposing edges of the board. Although theme words won’t be proper names, the spangram might be. Upon finding the spangram, it remains highlighted in yellow.
Keep your wits sharp.
“Certain themes are incomplete phrases. They could also represent stages in a procedure, objects from the same class, synonyms, or homophones,” The New York Times mentions. “As she adjusts the difficulty of Wordle challenges weekly, [Wordle and Strands editor Tracy]
Bennett intends to introduce unexpected twists occasionally.” What Is Today’s Strands Clue?
Let’s start with the NYT hint followed by my own:
String’s Attached
Mine is:
Old Plaything
What Are Today’s Strands Solutions?
We now move on to the solution part of the session, starting with the spangram and listing all the other solutions. The spangram is:
YOYOTRICKS
Here it is on the grid, continue reading:
And the solutions are:
- BREAKAWAY
- PINWHEEL
- ELEVATOR
- SEASICK
- SLEEPER
This was undoubtedly the toughest Strands I’ve tackled so far. Even after pinpointing the spangram, I remained baffled, managing to uncover the words solely through multiple hints. I haven’t handled a yoyo since I was roughly eight years old. I wasn’t aware of the specific terms for the tricks I was trying, and I wasn’t proficient at them either. How many people out there actually understand these tricks? Likely very few, and if you found yourself similarly puzzled, maybe that’s why you’re here.
