The following list focuses more on accessories and other items rather than specific games, offering ways to enhance titles dad likely already owns. I created a similar list for Mother’s Day that could also apply here. These items were provided by the manufacturers for evaluation purposes.
Heroscape Terrain
Heroscape is the sole game to appear on both lists. It's a light miniatures battle game drawing from various genres. Players create forces and construct battlefields using interlocking hexagonal terrain pieces, ensuring each game feels unique.
Beyond gameplay, it’s also great as a gift because of its easy-to-assemble, deployable, and storable terrain. Renegade Game Studios offers multiple terrain-only packs which can be used not only with Heroscape but also with other miniatures games. Many of my fellow hobbyists kept their original Heroscape sets just for this reason and are thrilled about new compatible terrain options becoming available.
Monster Fight Club Containers
Monster Fight Club produces a wide variety of terrain, most famously their Cyberpunk RED Combat Zone game. A simple way to expand that game is by picking up one or two of their Container sets. These crates provide cover during firefights and give snipers in your group a perfect elevated spot.
These containers fit well into nearly any modern or sci-fi gaming environment. For enthusiasts looking to build more detailed cityscapes, Monster Fight Club currently has a Kickstarter campaign running until June 28th, 2025 for Monsteropolis 2.0. The fulfillment date is expected around this time next year, but why not get ahead and plan next year’s gift early?
Don’t Look Back
There's a common belief that miniature-based games require huge investments of time and money. But everyone starts somewhere. Black Site Studios creates rule systems that work with any miniatures, although they do sell custom figures and offer printable templates for home use.
I recently played Don’t Look Back, a cooperative game where players face off against an 1980s-style slasher movie killer across multiple scenarios. I loved how the killer could suddenly emerge from behind scenery, making every corner feel threatening like Jason or Freddy was lurking. Cooperative games are ideal for family play, though the content of Don’t Look Back may better suit adult children playing alongside their dad.
Pathfinder Monster Core Battle Cards
Paizo, the publisher behind Pathfinder, excels at producing high-quality accessories fans love. Their core game might seem overwhelming at first, but the company makes consistent efforts to improve accessibility. They're also known for incredible artwork that brings the world of Golarion to life.
This attention to detail shines through in the Pathfinder Monster Core Battle Cards boxed set. Over 550 tarot-sized cards display monster art on one side and full stat blocks on the reverse. Whether used during gameplay or flipped through for encounter ideas, these cards are incredibly useful.
Battletech Technical Blueprints
Many dads have dedicated spaces for their hobby. Much of it is taken up by boxes, paints, brushes, and terrain—but what about decoration?
Battletech: Technical Blueprints includes four framed-ready prints of iconic mechs: the Mad Cat, Dire Wolf, Phoenix Hawk, and Warammer. Each blueprint-style poster is printed on thick poster board measuring 24” x 36”, adding futuristic style to any gamer’s space.
You can find these products online, directly from publishers or retailers, or at Friendly Local Gaming Stores worldwide.
