With 95 reviews in, 28 Years Later holds a 94% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes ahead of its theatrical debut this weekend. This makes it the highest-rated installment in the “28” franchise, the best major zombie film since 2016’s Train to Busan, and currently the second-best horror movie of 2025. Here's how the “28” series ranks:
- 28 Days Later – 87% critic score, 85% audience score
- 28 Weeks Later – 72% critic score, 66% audience score
- 28 Years Later – 94% critic score, N/A audience score (not yet available)
Here's a look at all mainstream horror films from 2025 so far:

- 28 Years Later – 94%
- Companion – 93%
- Final Destination Bloodlines – 92%
- Heart Eyes – 81%
- The Monkey – 79%
- Clown in a Cornfield – 74%
- The Gorge – 63%
- Borderline – 56%
- Wolf Man – 49%
- The Woman in the Yard – 42%
- Opus – 42%
Here is the official synopsis for the new film, which brings back together the creative minds behind the original 28 Days Later:
“Academy Award?-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award?-nominated writer Alex Garland reunite for 28 Years Later, a terrifying new "auteur horror" story set in the world created by 28 Days Later. It's been nearly three decades since the rage virus escaped from a biological weapons lab, and now, under strict quarantine, some survivors have found ways to endure among the infected. A group lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily guarded causeway. When one member of the group ventures into the dark heart of the mainland, he uncovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have transformed not only the infected but also other survivors.”
The film features Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes, with standout praise directed toward Comer and Fiennes (no slight intended to Taylor-Johnson). Cillian Murphy, who starred in 28 Days Later, does not return for this installment, despite earlier speculation.
We rarely bring up 28 Weeks Later because it didn’t quite live up to its predecessor, and it was also made without Alex Garland or Danny Boyle involved—just a different team altogether. I actually just remembered that Idris Elba was in that sequel, which was a nice surprise at least.
Is 28 Years Later going to be a box office success? With a modest budget of $75 million, it seems likely to exceed that figure, especially considering the original film was made for just $8 million. Regardless of financial performance, we’ve now received one of the greatest zombie movies ever made, and I’m counting down the hours until I can see it this weekend.
