Microsoft rushes KB5062324 to fix Windows 11 24H2 issue blocking newer updates
Jun 26, 2025 pm 04:29 PMMicrosoft is now deploying Windows 11 KB5062324 to resolve a bug in Windows 11 24H2 that causes Windows Update to stop functioning properly.
As initially reported by Windows Latest, Microsoft has quietly acknowledged that recent installations of Windows 11 24H2 contain a bug causing Windows Update to become stuck or non-functional unless the system is restarted and update checks are retried. This is an issue I’ve been highlighting with each Patch Tuesday release this year, so it’s reassuring to see it finally being addressed.
“The Windows configuration update resolves an issue in Windows that may cause the scan for updates to hang. Restarting Windows should allow the update scan to complete,” the company stated in a support document.
Microsoft explains that all devices will gradually receive and install Windows 11 KB5062324, and no reboot is needed to apply the changes.
Once the patch is applied, Windows Update should function normally again.
I reached out to Microsoft for more information, and they informed me that the June 2025 Patch Tuesday includes a permanent fix. However, you might still encounter the Windows 11 KB5062324 update if it's necessary for your system.
In some instances, we've also encountered an error where Windows falsely claims that the installed version has reached end-of-support, and checking for updates yields no results. It’s possible that the new configuration update KB5062324 could also resolve the “Get newer version of Windows to stay up to date” error displayed on the Windows Update screen.
Installation and other challenges plague Windows updates
A user recently shared that they were unable to install Windows 11 security updates such as KB5063060 because the installation fails repeatedly without any error codes appearing on Windows Update.
After restarting, the system displays 'Updates are in progress,' but upon booting back up, the update icon shows an exclamation mark. Some users have tried running the Windows Update troubleshooter, which restores the icon temporarily, yet the ‘Check for updates’ button remains missing, along with the update history window.
It's also worth mentioning that Microsoft recently pulled the original June patch (KB5060842) after reports surfaced of issues involving Easy Anti Cheat—an anti-cheat engine used in games like Fortnite.
Users noted that the June patch led to unexpected reboots while playing Fortnite, and Microsoft confirmed new compatibility problems with Easy Anti-Cheat.
Windows 11 KB5063060 was released through Windows Update on June 11, replacing the problematic June 10 patch, but it too comes with its own set of issues, including performance-related bugs.
In a Feedback Hub post, one user described how their system began freezing every 15 to 45 minutes after installing the June updates. Each freeze lasted approximately 10 seconds, during which time the mouse and keyboard became unresponsive and network connectivity was lost. These freezes occurred during regular usage activities like browsing the web, working in Word, or checking email.
