Google Search Console security update improves management of ownership tokens
Jul 01, 2025 am 09:56 AMGoogle Search Console has introduced a security update related to user permissions and control management, allowing for better handling of ownership tokens.
Ownership tokens are used when users verify your site in Search Console, Merchant Center, and other Google products. Sometimes individuals who once had access no longer should.
This update simplifies the process of managing that access and removing unnecessary tokens and permissions when they’re no longer required.
What Google said. Google stated:
We’re rolling out further improvements to Search Console’s user and permission management, including features related to the management of unused ownership tokens. Tokens are the codes used for website ownership verification in Search Console, Merchant Center, and other Google products. We’ve seen cases where these were accidentally left behind after owners have moved on. In February 2023, we rolled out improvements to the user and permissions management report. The latest changes will improve accuracy and reflect the actual state of unused ownership tokens.
What it looks like. Within the user and permissions interface, under the “Unused ownership tokens” section, you’ll see a screen like this, where you can click “Remove” to delete access to those ownership tokens:
How it works. Here’s how to manage these ownership tokens:
- Go to the Users and permissions interface
- Select “Unused ownership tokens”
- Choose the tokens you want to remove and click “Remove” (refer to the screenshot below)
- Click “Verify removal” to finalize the removal of the unused ownership token
Why we care. It's important to ensure that only authorized individuals have access to your data and Search Console properties—and even more crucial that unauthorized people do not. As Nir Kalush from Google mentioned, “The update rolled out today lets you verify the removal of the unused verification token so that removed owners cannot regain access to the property.”
So, review your tokens and remove any that are no longer needed.
