Today's NYT Mini Crossword Clues And Answers For Wednesday, July 9th

I’m a bit delayed with this NYT Mini Crossword guide since the puzzles are only available to play at 7pm PT the evening before, and that happened to be the exact time my son and I attended an early screening of the new Superman movie! It's all about timing. The good news is that a review of James Gunn’s film will appear on this blog shortly.
The NYT Mini offers a smaller, quicker, more manageable version of the larger and tougher NYT Crossword. Unlike its bigger counterpart, it can be played for free without a subscription to The New York Times. You can access it via the web or through the app, although the archive requires the app for access.
Spoilers ahead!

Now for the answers! Be warned — spoilers follow!
Across
1A. Subsides like the tide – EBBS
5A. Leggings lead-in to “l(fā)emon” – LULU
6A. Poet Robert with a "cool" last name – FROST
8A. Manhattan neighborhood near the East Village – NOHO
9A. Quick joyride – SPIN
Down
1D. Fairylike figure of folklore – ELF
2D. Poet Robert with a "hot" last name – LOWELL
3D. Weakly hit fly ball – BLOOP
4D. Food made using a bamboo mat known as a “makisu” – SUSHI
7D. Quite the heavy weight – OAF
I got off to a solid start solving this one, quickly figuring out EBBS, LULU, and FROST while also filling in ELF along the way. FROST isn't exactly “hot,” but it was the first Robert poet that came to mind, and it fit. At 2-Down, another “hot” Robert clue threw me off momentarily until I realized it was Robert LOWELL, which makes more sense in context. I knew SUSHI right away, but my lack of baseball knowledge held me back from getting BLOOP until after I filled in NOHO and SPIN. I did make a mistake by typing NOHH, which messed up TON and confused me briefly. My total time was 1:20.
