- Google's Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL have a built-in Thermometer app to measure object temperature.
- To use it, open the Thermometer app, tap "Object Temperature," and choose your object type.
- If the results are incorrect, move the phone closer to the object, check if the temperature is within the app’s range, or restart the app or device.
I’ve never liked burning my lips or mouth from hot drinks, but I can’t carry a thermometer around everywhere. Fortunately, my Google Pixel 9 Pro XL allows me to check the temperature of various objects without any hassle.
Pixel's Built-In Thermometer App Can Measure Object Temperature
Google’s Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL come with a pre-installed Thermometer app that helps you determine the temperature of different objects. These models include a small temperature sensor located near the camera module, enabling you to gauge how hot or cold something is.
You should find the Thermometer app already installed on your device. If not, you can download it from the Google Play Store.
Keep in mind that the readings provided by the app aren't FDA-approved for medical purposes, but they are accurate enough for everyday use.
How to Use Pixel's Thermometer App
To begin measuring an object's temperature with your Pixel device, open the app drawer and launch the Thermometer app. On the main screen, select "Object Temperature." Then, choose the type of object you want to measure. Available options include Food, Liquid, and Cooking Surfaces.

Your Pixel has a few tricks up its sleeve.
17 Here’s what each usually includes:- Food: meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, dairy, eggs, and processed food.
- Liquid: water, oil, milk, wine, vinegar, soy sauce, and honey.
- Cooking Surfaces: stainless steel, copper, cast iron, aluminum, ceramic, and non-stick pan.
Once you've selected your object type, hold your phone within two inches of the object. Keep the device steady so the sensor can focus properly. A real-time temperature reading will appear on the screen. Tap the on-screen circle to capture the measurement.
I tested this feature by checking the temperature of my tea, and it was spot-on—just right for drinking. Occasionally, I also use it to verify the temperature of delivered meals to see if they need reheating.
To save the result, tap the "Save" button at the bottom of the screen. If you wish to delete the reading, press the "Delete" button. You can retake the measurement by tapping the arrow icon. Since the app stores previous measurements, you can review them later or compare changes over time.
Troubleshoot Issues With Measuring Temperature
If you encounter issues while trying to measure temperatures with your Pixel device, try these troubleshooting steps.
If the Measurement Is Not Accurate
Inaccurate readings might be due to a faulty sensor, an incompatible phone case, or dust covering the sensor. Remove the case and clean the area around the camera sensor. Retake the measurement without the case and ensure your phone is no more than two inches away from the object.
If You See a “Not Available” Message
A “Not Available” message means the object’s temperature is outside the measurable range of the sensor, which operates between -5°F (-20°C) and 392°F (200°C).
If the App Is Glitchy
If the app isn’t working correctly, close and reopen it. If problems continue, restart your phone and relaunch the app after the device boots back up.
Note that this feature is exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL. Even if you install the Thermometer app on another device, it won’t function without the required hardware sensor.
This is one of those small yet incredibly handy features of my Pixel 9 Pro XL. I regularly use it at home and when I'm out at cafes. I’d love to hear what you'll test with it first—feel free to share!
