With the weekend behind us, it's time to kick off a fresh week, and what better way to start than with the Connections answer for today, 14th July.
If you're unfamiliar with the game, Connections presents you with a set of 16 words that must be grouped into four sets where each group shares some sort of link. These links can be anything—similar meanings, parts of place names, items found in a specific room, or something even more abstract!
Though it may seem simple at first glance, the puzzles vary in difficulty from one group to another - Yellow being the simplest and Purple typically the most challenging. Because of this, figuring out today’s Connections answer could prove to be quite difficult. You might spot one group immediately but struggle with another. Don’t worry—we’ve got your back!
Originally created during The New York Times' annual game jam, the beta version of Connections launched in June 2023. It has since become one of the most popular games offered by The NYTimes, second only to Wordle. Some have drawn comparisons between Connections and the BBC’s Only Connect...
Hint for today's Connections puzzle
Rather than jumping straight to the solution, let's take a look at some hints for today's Connections:
- Yellow - Refers to variations of the same hue.
- Green - Describes something that is also the title of a recent song by Tate McRae.
- Blue - Each word in this group precedes a common word that unites them.
- Purple - Film character names from the same studio, with an extra letter added to each word.
- One of the Blue words combined with the theme word would make something associated with pirate ships.
Keep in mind—Yellow is the easiest, followed by Green and Blue, while Purple is the trickiest.

Connections answer for 14th July
Here's today's Connections solution:
- Shades of Blue - Baby, Ice, Powder, Sky
- Descriptors for a Sports Car - Compact, Fast, Sleek, Sporty
- Words Preceding "Roger/s" - Ginger, Jolly, Mister, Roy
- Disney Characters Plus an Extra Letter - Abut, Belled, Flounders, Scary
I managed okay today—figured out Yellow quickly and had a hunch about Green. But Blue and Purple really threw me off, so there's definitely room for improvement.
What to play after finishing Connections?
The obvious next step is Wordle, but if you've already completed that, The New York Times offers several other great games. For word lovers, there's the Mini Crossword, Spelling Bee, Letter Boxed, and Strands—a newer beta game. If you'd like a break from letters and words, Tiles (a pattern-matching game) and Sudoku are both excellent options.
Outside of The NYTimes, check out Semantle, which challenges you to reach a hidden word based on semantic similarity rather than spelling. Each guess gives you a numerical clue indicating how close you are. If you prefer the Connections style, Puzzgrid offers hundreds of similar puzzles, but with a twist—you only get three minutes to solve each one.
(Or, alternatively, you could always watch Only Connect on BBC iPlayer...)
If reading is more your thing, we've previously explored why The NYTimes Mini Crossword is such a delight and spoken with Jonathan Knight, Head of Games at The NYTimes.
Best of luck with today's Connections puzzle!
