How to Automatically Fix Column Width to Fit Your Data in Excel
Feb 06, 2025 pm 11:38 PMExcel column width automatic adjustment: say goodbye to the cumbersomeness of manual adjustment!
Are you tired of manually adjusting Excel column width? This article will introduce a simple and fast method to let Excel automatically adjust column width and save you valuable time!
Traditional method of manually adjusting column width
Excel provides two commonly used methods for manually adjusting column width:
- Drag adjustment: Click and drag the boundary between column headers.
- Automatically adjust column width: Select the column you want to adjust (or the entire worksheet), and then click "Format" > "Automatically adjust column width" in the "Start" tab.
However, these traditional methods are inefficient when processing large amounts of data.
Excel VBA automatically adjusts column width
Use Excel's Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), you can automatically adjust column widths. Even if you are not familiar with programming, it can be done easily!
Step 1: Open the VBA Editor
Right-click on the worksheet tab at the bottom of the Excel window and select "View Code".
Step 2: Add code
In the VBA window, select "Worksheet" in the first drop-down menu. Enter the following code in the code area:
Cells.EntireColumn.AutoFit
Step 3: Close the VBA window
Click "X" in the upper right corner of the VBA window to close the window.
Now, the column width will automatically adjust as soon as you reactivate the worksheet. Columns with large data volume will automatically expand, and columns with small data volume will automatically shrink.
When adding or deleting data, the column width will also be automatically adjusted.
To cancel the auto-adjustment, reopen the VBA window, delete the added line of code, and close the window.
Precautions
- Ctrl Z cannot be used to undo the changes to VBA code. Make sure the worksheet is saved before adding the code.
- After clearing the contents of the automatically adjusted column, the column width will not automatically return to the default value unless you add new data or adjust it manually.
Alternative: Automatic line wrap
Another way to make all text readable in Excel cells is to use the "Bring" tool. This keeps the current column width, but forces text to wrap lines within the cell. The disadvantage is that the row height may be inconsistent, which affects aesthetics and readability.
