Customize Your Instagram Story Backgrounds: A Step-by-Step Guide
Adding a photo to your Instagram Story automatically applies a gradient background based on the image's colors. While sometimes perfect, altering this background can be surprisingly tricky. This guide outlines three simple methods to achieve the desired look.
Method 1: Solid Color Backgrounds
Begin by adding a placeholder photo to your Story draft. This image will be hidden later. (Note: If you're re-sharing a tagged Story, this initial image will remain visible.)
Next, follow these steps:
- iOS: Tap the three dots (top right), then "Draw."
- Android: Tap the draw icon (squiggly line).
Select the pen tip icon (far left). Choose a color from the bottom palette (swipe to see more options) or use the eyedropper to sample a color from your placeholder image. Press and hold for two seconds to fill the background with your chosen color. Tap "Done."
To add a photo overlay, tap the sticker icon (square smiley face), select the camera roll sticker (iOS: circular preview with mountains; Android: two rectangles with a plus sign), and choose your image.
iOS users have a shortcut: Copy the desired photo from your camera roll (share icon > Copy Photo) and paste it into your Story draft. It may appear briefly in the bottom left; otherwise, use the sticker method.
Method 2: Translucent Backgrounds
For a translucent tint, repeat the steps above, but select the highlighter icon instead of the pen tip. Press and hold to adjust opacity; a third press creates a solid color. Photo overlays are still possible.
Method 3: Custom Background Images & Instagram's Create Tool
Use any image from your camera roll as a background: Add it to your Story like a regular photo, resizing and rotating as needed. Then, use the camera roll sticker to add your desired photo on top.
Instagram's Create tool offers pre-set backgrounds and templates. Start a new Story, activate the camera as if taking a photo, and tap the "Aa" icon. Swipe through the bottom circular icons to access various background options. Select a background, then use the camera roll sticker to add your chosen image. Note that some options have limited flexibility.
By mastering these techniques, you can effortlessly create visually stunning Instagram Stories with perfectly customized backgrounds.
