iOS 13 has launched Memoji stickers – you can customize your cartoon avatars according to your preferences and select preset emojis. You can use the animal (or Animoji) default settings, but it will be more fun to make a Memoji that looks like yours instead of some plain graffiti.
You can also use Memoji outside of iOS environments and in other applications such as Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. This means you can express your love to all your friends in a very personal and accurate way.
Memoji Basics
To make Memoji, open iMessage, click the Memoji sticker icon (it is a little monkey), and then click the plus icon . This will open the creator and you will find that there are many options to customize your avatar:
- Skin Tone. Used to select skin tone and other details such as freckles, beauty moles, and the degree of rosy cheeks.
- Hair style. Here you can choose your hairstyle and color. They are preset and you can't customize them too much, but there are a lot of options.
- Eyebrows. Used to select the style and color of the eyebrows. If you wear it, you can also add eyebrow piercings or Indian Bindi.
- Eyes. This will allow you to control the shape and color of your eyes, as well as the length of your eyelashes. You can also try adding different colors of eyeliner and eye shadow.
- Head. Used to determine the shape and approximate age of your head.
- Nose. There are not many options to choose from the type of nose to choose – there are only three options – but you can add a nose ring.
- mouth. Here you can choose the shape of your mouth, the color of your lips, and the appearance of your teeth. Additionally, you can add any lip or tongue ring.
- Ears. Used to determine if you have or have no earlobes. As you might imagine, you can also add earrings, or even AirPods (yes, really).
- Faceful hair. Used to add and color beards, sideburns and beards.
- Glasses. Used to add glasses, monocles or eye masks.
- Headwear. Here you can add hats or religious headdresses.
Among all the options, you can control a lot of content. If you want to make a shape with green skin and perforated body, you can do it. On the other hand, if you want to make a cartoonish, but realistic avatar of you or your friend, you can do it too.
Create your Memoji avatar
For me, the real fun of Memoji is the ability to use my (pretty) face as an emoji reaction in my chat – why use boring yellow round creatures when I can use my own image ? The tricky thing is that this only works if Memoji is accurate. If people look at it and say, “It’s kind of like you, but thinner,” it loses its effect. So let's see how to make a good, accurate, and interesting Memoji.
First, take a closer look at the person you are making Memoji. If that's you, take a selfie or prepare a mirror during the entire process of designing your avatar. This will help you portray you more accurately than you think you look.
While there are a lot of options, you can actually only control some facial features when making Memoji, so you need to set them up correctly. Here is the photo I'm using: me.
Next, open iMessage and start creating Memoji. First, you have to choose a skin tone. Choose the one closest to your true skin tone, but don't stop there. As the theme shows, the key to making a good Memoji is not to select the right tone among the 17 default options, but to use the slider to adjust whatever you choose and make it super accurate. For this step, I actually raised my iPhone to my arm, matching my choices to my actual skin tone as much as possible.
Also, make sure to scroll down and don't miss all the options available in the Skin Tone tab. If you have freckles, beauty moles, or your cheeks are particularly pink, you can add these details here. This will really make a difference.
The next is the hairstyle and color. Choosing a hairstyle is relatively simple: Scroll through all available alternatives and choose the one closest to your hairstyle. You may not be able to get perfect results, but there isn't much extra to do here, so that's all.
But, hair color is one of the characteristics you can really play and get the right effect. As with the skin tone, select the color closest to your hair color from the available options and use the slider to adjust. Then, scroll down and dive into the new Highlight option. Here you can turn the relatively accurate hair color into the exact same color as your hair by adding effects like bleaching hair or fading dyes. I recommend you try the highlight color and blend mode (Modern, Classic and Gradial), which will make your Memoji hair look more natural or more like Immersion effect.
For eyebrows, your choices are very limited. Choose the style that best matches you and adjust the color to your hair – remember that your eyebrows tend to be a few degrees deeper than your hair. If you have eyebrow piercings or are wearing a Bindy, you can also add them here and choose from a variety of colors and styles.
The eyes are windows to the soul – it is also very important if you want your Memoji to look good. Go back to that mirror or photo and take a closer look at your eye color. Try to determine the hue and the background (gray, blue, and gray and gray-green are different) and make fine adjustments.
In the Memoji world, eye shapes are always cartoony and exaggerated, so unless your eye shape is different, I recommend sticking to the default settings. Also, don't forget the makeup options. If you always wear eyeliner or eyeshadow, you can add it here. Getting small details like the right eye shadow tone will really enhance the effect.
For the head, you can hardly do anything except shape. Choose the one that best matches you – it all depends on how strong the jawline is and how long the head is. Here you can also adjust your age, which is almost more important than your actual face shape. The default Memoji looks young and childish, and it's OK if you're in your teens, or even in your twenties or thirties. But if you are a little older, you can make your Memoji more accurate by using the older age option. It adds a little realism by adding some laughter around your eyes and some other textures to the otherwise creepy smooth skin.
The nose, mouth and ears are very limited. Browse these options and select the most accurate one. It’s better to lean towards comics rather than away from them – because Memoji is a cartoon, it at least looks fun. Make sure to set the lip color and any jewelry correctly, too.
Face hair is the most important tab if you have a beard or beard – here you can adjust your most unique (and epic) facial features. Like hair, you'll get highlight options here, so make sure to use it to get the right color.
The last two tabs, glasses and headdresses, are where you add a finishing touch to the exact Memoji – or just have a little fun. I look handsome in a cowboy hat.
That's it, you're almost done. Go back and adjust any final options. Otherwise, click to finish to save your Memoji. If you want to do any editing, you can always go back to the Memoji creator later, slide to your avatar, and click Edit—I'm still thinking about that cowboy hat.
Use Memoji stickers
Memoji wasn't limited to iMessage until iOS 13 - but with Memoji stickers, they are now available system-wide. If the sticker itself is not supported, you can insert it as an image into your message application.
To use them, click the emoji (or world) icon in the lower left corner of the default keyboard and scroll to the left. Your Recently used Memoji will be displayed here - To view all Memojis, click on three small dots. Choose the one you want to use – and start adding a real personality to your message.
