AMD's New RX 9000 Series GPUs: Great for Non-Gamers, a Questionable Upgrade for Gamers
The RTX 5090 is a top-tier GPU, but is it worth the hefty price tag for gamers? This article explores AMD's counter-offer: the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. While potentially unnecessary for gamers, they present a compelling alternative.
The RX 9070 ($550) boasts 56 CUs, a 2.52GHz clock speed, and 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM. The RX 9070 XT ($600) increases the clock speed to 2.97GHz and features 64 CUs, maintaining the same VRAM. Interestingly, these cards use GDDR6, unlike NVIDIA's GDDR7 RTX 50-series, but AMD's abundant VRAM seems to compensate.
Both cards support PCIe 5.0, DisplayPort 2.1a, and HDMI 2.1b. Power consumption varies: the RX 9070 XT has a TBP of 304 watts, while the RX 9070 consumes 220 watts.
RDNA 4 architecture enhances efficiency, clock speeds, and register allocation. Ray tracing throughput is doubled, and AI performance is 8x faster thanks to next-gen accelerators. For gamers, the improved AI translates primarily to FSR 4 upscaling, exclusive to the RX 9000 series.
"The RX 9000 Series, built on the AMD RDNA? 4 architecture, delivers a powerful combination of performance, visuals, and value for gamers and creators. These advanced graphics cards redefine high-resolution gaming with third-generation ray tracing, creating immersive experiences and maximizing hardware utilization through a suite of AMD features."
AMD claims the RX 9070 XT rivals the NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti ($750), a card often unavailable. It also offers a 42% 4K performance boost over the RX 7900 GRE. The RX 9070 provides a 21% 4K improvement. Both surpass the ray tracing capabilities of their predecessors.
While NVIDIA focuses on AI, AMD positions itself as a consumer-centric brand. Although the RX 9000 series offers AI capabilities, AMD's marketing clearly targets gamers feeling overlooked.
It's important to note that these performance claims are based on pre-release data. Real-world testing is needed, and AMD's historical ray tracing performance relative to NVIDIA remains a concern.
The RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT launch March 6th. Unlike NVIDIA, AMD won't directly sell these cards; partner brands (ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte) will handle distribution at the suggested prices to mitigate supply issues.
