Microsoft: DHCP issue hits KB5060526, KB5060531 of Windows Server

Microsoft has acknowledged that after applying the June 2025 update for Windows Server, the DHCP server service may stop responding or fail to establish a connection. This issue impacts several versions of Windows Server, including Windows Server 2025 (KB5060842), Windows Server 2022 (KB5060526), Windows Server 2019 (KB5060531), and Windows Server 2016 (KB5061010).

According to reports gathered by Windows Latest from user experiences, once you install one of the listed updates—such as Windows Server 2016 (KB5061010)—the DHCP server becomes unusable. After booting the server, the DHCP server connection fails within 20-50 seconds. However, removing the update restores the functionality of the DHCP server.

One affected user shared on a forum: “This has turned into a significant inconvenience in our setup since we applied the patches last week. DHCP clients are losing their leases. It's worth noting that we aren't running DHCP on our domain controllers. We're using Server 2022.”

Another user mentioned: “I’ve proactively declined KB5061010, KB5060531, KB5060526, and KB5060842 on my domain controllers, some of which offer DHCP services.”

DHCP is widely used by server administrators to automatically allocate IP addresses to network devices, enabling employees and users to connect to the internet and access internal systems. This protocol is crucial in environments such as offices, schools, and government institutions.

In response to the problem, Microsoft confirmed through a support ticket that they are actively investigating the issue.

“The DHCP Server service might intermittently stop responding after installing this security update. This issue affects IP renewal for clients,” the company stated.

Windows Latest learned about the confirmation via a support ticket initially, but by June 16, Microsoft had updated its official documentation to acknowledge the DHCP-related issues.

“We are working on releasing a resolution in the coming days and will provide more information when it is available,” Microsoft added in an updated support document.

It is understood by Windows Latest that Microsoft plans to release a standalone patch for all affected versions of Windows Server through the Update Catalog. If your system is impacted by the DHCP issue, you can download the .msu file and apply the fix manually. The upcoming monthly update will also include this fix.

There’s another known issue where CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) text doesn’t display correctly at 96 DPI or with scaling set to 100%.

Microsoft is currently analyzing the root cause, which seems linked to recent Google Chromium updates. If you use one of these languages and are affected, you may notice blurry text rendering in Edge, Chrome, or other browsers.

How to resolve DHCP issues following the June 2025 Windows Server updates?

From testing conducted by Windows Latest, removing the problematic patch appears to be the only effective solution for resolving DHCP issues. However, doing so leaves your system vulnerable to the security threats addressed in the June 2025 update.

Microsoft: DHCP issue hits KB5060526, KB5060531 of Windows Server

If you still decide to remove the update to restore DHCP functionality, proceed by opening Settings > Windows Update > Update History, and locate the specific KB number. Make a note of it—it should correspond to one of the following, depending on your Windows Server version:

  • Windows Server 2025 (KB5060842), Windows Server 2022 (KB5060526), Windows Server 2019 (KB5060531), and Windows Server 2016 (KB5061010).

On the Update history page, choose Uninstall updates and click “Uninstall” next to the relevant patch you wish to remove.

Once the patch has been uninstalled, schedule a system reboot, and the DHCP server should become functional again.

Windows Server users aren’t the only ones facing challenges. Users of the consumer edition of Windows 11 are also encountering their share of problems.
