Smartwatch Features Matter, But Looks Matter More

Mar 04, 2025 am 03:01 AM

Android smartwatch manufacturers are on the rise in innovation, but at the same time, I hope they don’t forget one of the most important properties of the watch – the appearance – while launching new features.

Appearance is preferred, intelligence is second to smart

I want my smartwatch to have longer battery life, more convenient ways to interact, and a higher resolution display. But if I don't like the look, it all makes no sense.

Smartwatch Features Matter, But Looks Matter More I have always disliked the look of the Apple Watch. Fortunately, as an Android user, I didn't have to be forced to accept its design. I have other options. But that doesn't mean I haven't seen the reviews that touted the Apple Watch as the best smartwatch.

Of course, maybe. But I haven't seen an Apple Watch that I really want to wear on my wrist.

I don't write this article just to criticize Apple. In fact, I won't mention them again. There are some other watches that I also heard are great and I might consider them, but I can't overcome their appearance.

Bezel design is crucial

This is not a problem unique to smartwatches. I personally prefer minimalist watches. In my opinion, the Mudita Moment is the perfect watch. It's the regular watch I used to replace my scratched Pixel Watch. The closer the watch is to the look of this watch, the more I want to wear it.

Most watches, especially those for men, are relatively bulky. They have large patterned bezels and huge buttons. It looks great with the same bulky metal strap. They exudes a 20th century refinement, but I am undoubtedly a millennial who is very pleased with the aesthetic changes we have made in the 21st century.

Garmin Marq series luxury watches belong to the former type. I believe they are all very good watches. But even before I check the specifications or software, I knew I wouldn't buy it.

The strap is equally important

I had the first generation Moto 360 a long time ago, and since then I haven't used a smartwatch for a long time. A few years later, the Pixel Watch attracted me again. I was trying to replace my laptop with my phone, so I wanted a watch to share the fun.

Unfortunately, the Pixel Watch uses a proprietary connector, so it is not compatible with any watch straps on the market.

Smartwatch Features Matter, But Looks Matter More I don't like the options Google offers, so I looked for a third-party strap, but the strap I tried was awful in every way. Loose connections and poor quality.

Smart watches compatible with standard watch straps have almost unlimited strap options. Mudita Moment I like? It's not just the dial that attracts me. I like its strap choice. Now, I still use the strap I bought for Moment, even though I have switched back to my smartwatch.

Luckily, while the Apple Watch and Pixel Watch each have their own features, most other smartwatches stick to a proven design.

The watch I currently wear

Smartwatch Features Matter, But Looks Matter More So, what have I worn recently? Galaxy Watch 6. Now I use the Galaxy Z Fold 6, this watch is the ideal companion – not just because of the software. The silver Galaxy Watch 6 and the silver Galaxy Z Fold 6 share a similar minimalist modern style. There are some extra etching patterns on both devices.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra and the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic are completely different. What attracted me was not the Galaxy watch itself, but the look of a regular Galaxy Watch.

But the temptation still exists

I was impressed by the battery life of the OnePlus Watch 3. Can it last for 5 days when running a complete Wear OS system? If you use the energy-saving mode, it can last more than two weeks? This means I can actually not charge for half a month?

Unfortunately, just one look at this device, I know it is not suitable for me. Not only is it a bulky watch, it only offers a large 47mm dial, which I don't like the numbers engraved on the bezel. This part of the design, as well as the overall design language, is very similar to the OnePlus Watch 2.

Smartwatch Features Matter, But Looks Matter More I'm not saying it's ugly. In fact, I think it's a pretty attractive watch... worn on someone else's wrist. I prefer to wear a slimmer watch on my wrist. I could wait for the OnePlus Watch 3R, but the 2R's simpler design has resulted in a degradation in workmanship quality. This is unacceptable to me.

As manufacturers launch new models, I hope they will introduce more diverse styles into their own product line. I think the Mobvoi TicWatch series is a great example. While I definitely won't wear TicWatch Atlas, even if someone gives me free, I prefer the look of the TicWatch Pro 5 (although I prefer the silver version). I won't buy it today, but I also like the older TicWatch E3.

It is tempting to announce that a watch is the best smartwatch based on impressive specifications, excellent features or good price. But for what we wear on our wrists, appearance is an unnecessarily overlooked factor for most of us.
