How to stop display static after waking your Mac's monitor

Readers have intermittently reported static interference after external monitors wake up from sleep, but we recently received a new report: This problem occurred on every monitor of a couple. They found no rules, and like previous readers, turning off the monitor and then turning it on can solve the problem.

Although there is no universal answer, research shows that the problem may lie in the connection line or protocols transmitted on the connection line. Depending on the model of your Mac and monitor, you can easily troubleshoot problems.

The HDCP (High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) protocol runs in the background of all HDMI or DisplayPort compliant devices, including using via Thunderbolt or USB, is a ridiculous attempt to prevent piracy. HDCP requires a "handshake" between the host device (Mac or other computer) and the monitor. If the handshake fails, this may experience a slight delay after the Mac wakes up, and the monitor does not receive the desired response, you may see static interference. Unplug the cable, restart the monitor, or press the Esc key on the login window screen, and then press any key. The status should be cleared, but it can only be cleared once.

Some people find that replacing the cable can solve the problem, whether the root cause is HDCP or cable problem. The performance levels of HDMI cables vary. You don't need a specially gold-plated cable, which costs 20 times the cost of a regular cable, but you almost certainly need an HDMI high-speed cable or better cable starting at less than $10.

All DisplayPort cables can handle any resolution and refresh rate, but since Apple only uses USB-C and HDMI ports to transfer video data, you may be using an HDMI-to-HDMI cable, a USB-C-to-HDMI cable, or a USB-C adapter or dock with an HDMI port. If your monitor has native USB-C support and you have an alternate port, try using a USB-C-to-USB-C cable.
