How to Disable Mail Sender Icons on iPhone in iOS 18.2
May 08, 2025 am 10:46 AMThe revision of Apple's latest iPhone mail app has caused strong controversy among users, and its new email category features and eye-catching sender avatars are particularly criticized. These large-sized avatars occupy the space of the email interface, not only making it difficult to identify the sender, but also blocks the email subject and preview content, reducing the efficiency of email reading and browsing. Even though the avatar shows contact photos, most emails do not associate photos, and instead are blurred thumbnails, which further affects the beauty of the interface and user experience.
Fortunately, just like the annoying email category feature can be disabled, we can also turn off these annoying giant sender avatars and contact photos to restore the classic appearance of the email app and enhance the user experience.
How to disable contact photos/sender avatars in iPhone mail app
Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Go to the "Mail" setting.
Find the "Show contact photos" option and turn it off.
Return to the email application and you will see the restored email interface.
This will bring the email application interface closer to the original classic design.
The following image shows the email interface after disabling the avatar, even in the revised email app for iOS 18.2:
Comparing the default revised email interface of iOS 18.2, you will find that it displays large contact photos instead of practical email preview information:
It should be noted that in the above screenshot, the new email classification function has also been disabled.
If you don't like the new mail app revision, you may also need to disable the mail category feature. This setting option is located in the mail app itself, not in the Settings app.
The sender's avatar is designed to make the email app look like a social media messaging app. Although it may be more convenient for users who often contact acquaintances, it is not necessary for most users. In addition, few people use email applications as social media tools, so it is puzzling to imitate the appearance of social applications while squeezing interface space, reducing readability and email preview. If you are using larger font size email settings, these giant avatars further compress the sender's name, subject, and space for email previews.
What do you think about the revision of the email app and the sender avatar feature? Do you like or hate this feature? Welcome to share your thoughts in the comment section.
