Overview

  • FineTrack has loud alarms and built-in key ring support, but lacks the precise positioning capabilities of AirTag.
  • The wallet-friendly FineTrack Slim is compact and loud, but requires a dedicated charger.
  • Both use Apple's powerful Find My network.

AirTag has become the standard option for tracking items, especially for Apple users who use iPhones. Ugreen FineTrack and FineTrack Slim are two alternatives with unique features, but they are not doing as satisfactory for a variety of reasons.

A fully qualified smart tracker

Ugreen FineTrack Slim and FineTrack Smart Finder Review: Nice Features That Don’t Measure up to an AirTag Ugreen FineTrack is AirTag's most direct competitor. It reminds me of the old-fashioned Tile tracker, measuring 1.41 x 1.41 x 0.29 inches. Although it's larger than the AirTag, it's flatter and easier to hold. It also provides a feature that many AirTag users have long been looking forward to - a built-in key ring. Since keys are one of the most common uses for item trackers, it’s a pleasure to see the FineTrack secured to the key without the need to purchase additional accessories.

The tracker is out of the box and has built-in CR20232 button battery. Ugreen said that under normal use, the battery lasts for two years. This is twice as long as AirTag, and is a big advantage for those who care about e-waste.

Another important feature is that FineTrack is compatible with Apple's Find My network. This allows billions of Apple devices around the world to search for FineTrack. As anyone who has used AirTag will tell you, the network can provide tracking almost anywhere on Earth.

With Find My compatibility, it takes only a few minutes to add a tracker, which is similar to the AirTag setup process. Just go to the Find My app, select "My Items", and then add FineTrack. You can customize the name and icon.

I have used a tracker to track my luggage on several trips. Tracking with the Find My app is very fast and easy, and I always know where my luggage is. I could even see where my luggage was loaded onto the plane.

When it comes to tracking nearby items, FineTrack also addressed my biggest dissatisfaction with the AirTag—its very small and hard to hear speakers. The FineTrack's speakers are at least twice as big as the AirTag, which makes tracking easier. Even under the clothes, I could hear the speakers. However, this also comes at a certain price.

One of my favorite AirTag features is precision positioning. With a modern iPhone, you can see precise instructions pointing to the AirTag like "Turn Left" and "8 feet." FineTrack does not have this feature. If you lose an item, you need to want the speaker to be loud enough to help you find it. For me, precise positioning is more important.

Ready to put it in your wallet, but there are some things to note

Ugreen FineTrack Slim and FineTrack Smart Finder Review: Nice Features That Don’t Measure up to an AirTag Another big drawback of the oval AirTag is that it is not suitable for tracking wallets. While there are some workarounds and wallets designed specifically for AirTag, many people are reluctant to give up on their usual wallets.

FineTrack Slim is a big help, shaped like a credit card. Although it's a little thicker, it fits well in all the wallets I've tried. The speakers are another highlight, which surprised me very much. Given that it's so thin and covered with other cards, I didn't expect the Slim model to surpass the AirTag, but it does. I asked my family to hide my purse under the sofa cushion and I could easily find it from the other end of the room. But like its larger version, there is no precise positioning capability.

The rechargeable battery lasts for 6 months under normal use. But charging Slim has brought my least favorite part—the non-standard charging cable. I already have enough charging cables and finding a specific cable after six months is almost a decisive factor, for me and many others.

Like FineTrack, the FineTrack Slim has a good range, similar to AirTag.

Should you buy Ugreen FineTrack or FineTrack Slim?

I can't recommend buying a Ugreen FineTrack or FineTrack Slim instead of a standard AirTag. While the FineTrack has twice the battery life of the AirTag and can last for two years with a single battery, it is its only prominent feature. It's bigger than the AirTag and doesn't offer some precise positioning options on the iPhone that make the AirTag stand out.

If you can't change your wallet, the FineTrack Slim is OK. But in addition to the lack of precise positioning, keeping a small non-standard charging cable can also be another problem.

Even nearly five years after AirTag was launched, it remains the best item tracker on the market, and there is also a supporting accessories ecosystem.
