Windows PCs Are Getting a

The latest update introduces a "Hey, Copilot" feature within the settings of the Copilot application. Once activated, you can simply say "Hey, Copilot" to trigger the Copilot microphone, indicating that it's ready to listen. However, your PC must be powered on and unlocked for this functionality to operate; it won't activate if your computer is in sleep or hibernation mode.

Microsoft has clarified that this feature employs on-device audio processing, ensuring that no voice data is transmitted to your PC until the activation phrase is detected, similar to how Siri functions on Apple devices or Google Assistant/Gemini on Android phones. According to the blog post, "The wake word spotter utilizes an on-device 10-second audio buffer in memory, which is neither recorded nor stored locally."

However, there's a caveat: Windows will display a microphone status indicator in the taskbar continuously while your PC is running and the Copilot wake word is enabled. This continuous display can make it challenging to discern when other applications are accessing your microphone, which is likely why this feature is opt-in. Microsoft may need to integrate the wake word at the Windows system level or develop a workaround for the Copilot app to address this issue, though it's uncertain when such changes might occur.

Despite the wake word detection being processed locally on your device, the voice mode of Copilot still requires an internet connection. As stated in the blog post, "The recognition of the wake word is always performed locally and will attempt to initiate a Copilot Voice call upon detection. If you're offline, you'll see Copilot trying to establish a connection, but it will fail, and the call will end. Copilot Voice responses necessitate internet access and cloud processing, akin to typed interactions."

The "Hey, Copilot" feature is currently being rolled out in Copilot version 1.25051.10.0 and later, but it's restricted to Insider builds of Windows with the display language set to English. It is expected to become available on more PCs once any issues are resolved.
