Congratulations on the assumed purchase of your Nintendo Switch 2! As much fun as it is to enjoy single-player games, many of the console’s best moments happen when you’re playing with friends. However, for that to happen, you’ll need to connect additional controllers. In this wireless era of technology, adding a controller isn’t as straightforward as it used to be.
Fear not, social butterfly! Whether you're trying to pair a new Pro controller or syncing up your friend’s Joycons during their visit, we’ll walk you through every possible way to sync a controller to your console so you can play without hassle. We’ve even included backup methods just in case the standard approach doesn’t work for some reason.
The Standard Connection Process
In general, all controllers follow the same guidelines when syncing to a console:
- From the main console menu, select the “Controllers” option (the small gray Joycon icon on the bottom row).
- Select the Change Grip/Order option.
- You may think choosing “Search for Controllers” or “How to Pair Controllers” would work, but they don’t. The former helps locate already connected controllers, while the latter is just an informational screen.
- On the Change Grip/Order screen, press the L and R buttons on the controller.
- Wait for the controller to show up on the screen, then press L and R again to confirm the connection.
- Complete the connection process by pressing A.
The Sync Button Alternative
If the L and R method isn’t functioning properly, you can also use the small circular sync button located on the top side of every controller. During the Change Grip/Order screen, press and hold the button until a green light starts moving back and forth across the four connection light squares.
After a moment, they should sync to the Switch 2 console and can be connected via the L R method.
The Other Way To Sync Single And Paired Joycons
If neither the L R method nor the sync button is working, there’s a third method that is almost guaranteed to succeed.
Physically attach the Joycons to the Switch 2 console by placing them into the magnetic holders on the side of the device. After a brief moment, the Joycons will sync and can be removed (you might hear a sound or jingle).
Once removed, you can attempt to connect via the usual L R method as explained earlier.
The Other Way To Sync Switch 2 Pro Controllers
The Switch 2 Pro Controller cannot physically connect to the sides of the console like Joycons, but that doesn’t mean they can’t still connect directly.
Instead, use the USB cable that comes with the Pro controller to connect it to the Switch 2’s TV base. With the Switch 2 in the base and powered on, it will synchronize the controller. Afterward, it can connect the usual way.
This will require a USB to USB-C cable. We highly recommend using the one provided with the controller (since not all USB cables are created equal), but any will suffice in a pinch.
Alternatively, you can use a USB-C to USB-C cable to connect the Pro controller directly to the top or bottom of the Switch 2, eliminating the need for the TV base.
