How to begin Scheduled for Execution
To be able to start Scheduled for Execution, you need to have completed the previous quest, Accidents Happen.
With that completed, you can then return to the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary in Cheydinhal and speak to Vicente about the next contract.
In doing so, he'll offer you your next target: Valen Dreth, a Dark Elf prisoner who has been locked up for a long time. Your job is to put an end to him, with a mission that'll send you back to where Oblivion kicked off.
For the bonus reward, you'll have to complete the quest without killing any Imperial Guards, meaning any and all evasion tactics you have up your sleeve are incredibly useful.
Once you've finished the conversation and you're all set, travel to the Imperial Prison Sewer which you can fast travel to via an icon on your map.
Where to enter the Sewers and find the Imperial Prison
Once you've arrived outside the Sewers, it's time to head on in. Using the Imperial City Sewers Key you received from Vicente, enter through the gate and prepare for a bit of a trek.
As you'll soon discover, there are a few additional areas and zones to work your way through to return to the prison, as well as new enemies such as Mud Crabs.
Since the area is more maze-like than before, we've broken down each area below with map references to give you an overview of the location, along with any other information to help.
The red markers on each of the maps will show you where you'll be heading towards in each zone.
Sewers area 1 (from City Isle)
The first area begins in a place you might recognise, but quickly diverts off via a doorway on the right. There is a Rat and Mud Crab at the end of the pathway, but there's no real need to take them out unless they attack you.
As such, go through the passage on the right, following the corridor around, and heading straight forward until you reach a door that leads to the next area of the Sewers - you'll encounter a Crab in here too that you'll have to defeat.
The doorway you're looking for is found across a pathway that sits above a flooded room.
Sewers area 2
This next area is a little bit more extensive than the last, with more Rats and Mud Crabs to fight or evade.
You'll start off in a room with a couple of boxes you can loot, with the next room having a Rat and Mud Crab to fight.
As you move down the corridor, you'll enter a much larger, open area. In here, you'll want to turn left and head to the other end, dropping into the shallow water below. You'll move through a small tunnel and out the other side to a similar looking room.
Similar to the previous area, you'll encounter a couple of Mud Crabs along the way, but they're fairly quick to deal with.
In this second larger room, you'll want to continue heading forward till you reach the bridge above the water. This will lead to another corridor you can pass through to reach a third larger tunnel.
You'll be fighting some more Mud Crabs along the way, and once you're in that larger room, hop over to the other side to find a gate you can lockpick your way through.
After breaking open the gate, enter this last corridor to a small, square room and a door leading to the final area of the Sewers.
Sewers area 3 (leading to The Sanctum)
This next area is the final zone in the Sewers you'll have to navigate through until you reach the areas leading into the Prison itself.
You'll begin in a circular room with a couple of Slaughterfish flopping about - they can be easily avoided as you enter a corridor through a gate leading into a larger tunnel.
Much easier to navigate, you might recognise this tunnel from the beginning of the game. As you exit the corridor, turn right and head into the next room to find a couple of Rats and a flight of stairs leading to the entrance of the Sanctum.
As with the other areas, feel free to explore as much as you'd like in this area, but once you're ready, head up the stairs and lockpick your way into the Sanctum.
How to navigate the Prison underground and avoid detection
To reach Valen Dreth, you'll have to navigate through three more zones, all of which are in the underground zones you might remember from the beginning of the game.
You'll begin in the Sanctum, then move into the Imperial Subterranne, before reaching the Imperial Prison itself where Valen is.
There are a couple of patrolling guards you'll find in the rooms along the way, two of whom will be present as soon as you enter the Sanctum - let them finish their conversation and move before you exit through the corridor.
You're welcome to explore as much as you like as you move through these areas, but remember, if you're going for the bonus reward, do not kill any of the Imperial Guards.
Much like the Sewers, the areas are fairly maze-like, but with a lot of cover to hide from the Imperials, so take your time and stay crouched to remain undetected. We recommend saving as you go, be it the game's autosaves or your own, just in case you want to retry a specific section.
To help guide you through each of these rooms, use the maps and information below to inform your movements:
The Sanctum
The Sanctum is the first area in the Prison underground and besides the two guards talking as you enter, it's fairly straightforward to move through without being detected, so long as you stay out of sight and don't make too much noise.
After their conversation, the two soldiers head in opposing directions. One of the two you'll notice will stop next to a set of stairs nearby where you'll need to go.
To avoid him, simply scoot around to the right, stay crouched, and keep yourself hidden, and you should be able to reach the door with no issue at all.
This next door will take you into the Imperial Subteranne, the second of three areas in the Prison.
Imperial Subteranne
This next zone proved a little more tricky to get through undetected, but is still fairly manageable.
Soon after entering this area and moving through the opening area, you'll enter a corridor which is likely to have a soldier patrolling within it.
This solider moves around a couple of the rooms and corridors in this zone, and so you'll have to pick your moments carefully, using your third person camera to look around corners. Keep an eye out for the light from his torch too, as this will help locate him if he's nearby.
If ever he hears your movement, be sure to move a good distance away and hide behind a pillar so you can track his movements - there's a lot of cover in this area, so be sure to use it to your advantage. Wait till he resumses his normal pattern, and then follow him slowly, to pick the best moment to move through to the next room.
Overall, you'll have to rely on patience and careful movements to make it through this area undetected.
Besides the first corridor, his patrol path moves through the next room and into another nearby corridor you'll need to go through. After that, he'll then return to the room with a table and chairs in, and this is a good place to flank him as he returns from the second corridor.
To evade him, I waited for him to re-enter the room connecting the two corridors, and then slowly circle around a nearby pillar until he passed, moving past him and into that second corridor.
Follow this corridor and head up the stairs to the upper levels - you'll want to stay crouched in case the guard on the lower floor notices or hears you.
Part of the floor will be broken up here, but if you turn around to the left near the edge, there'll be a door leading to a short corridor and out into another area via a second door.
After going through the second door, go straight forward, around the corner and up the stairs to reach the door which takes you fully into the Imperial Prison area.
Where to find Valen Dreth in the Imperial Prison
Once you're into this area, your red objective marker will turn green as you're now in the same zone as your target, Valen Dreth. You'll no doubt recognise it as the first proper area you saw after exiting your cell at the beginning of the game.
Head forward, up the flights of stairs and enter a corridor on the opposite side of the room. Follow this around to the left, up another set of stairs and to a broken section of the wall.
Continue through the hole in the wall to reach the cell where you began the game, but be cautious of the Imperial speaking to Valen around the corner - a little bit of additional patience is required before you can finally move in for the kill.
Once the conversation has finished and the Imperial has moved away, you can emerge from your cell.
How to open the cell and eliminate Valen Dreth
To enter Valen's cell, you'll need Vallen Dreth's Cell Key which - conveniently - you can find on the nearby table, to your left as you exit the cell you were in.
On this table, you'll also find an Imperial Prison Key which is also worth collecting as it'll help you make a quick getaway following Valen's death.
Head back to Valen's cell, unlock the door, and allow the conversation to ensue.
Pick whatever dialogue choices you deem necessary, and once the conversation has ended, you're free to unleash your weapon onto Valen and eliminate him in cold blood.
Once he's down, simply make your way up the stairs nearby, and exit through the door to the Bastion - you'll be able to unlock the door with the Imperial Prison key you found on the table a few moments ago.
You don't have to worry about stealth in this next area, so simply head out through the door to the Imperial City, Prison District - opposite where the solider at the desk is sat - and then head back to Cheydinhal to report back to Vicente.
How to complete the Scheduled for Execution quest
Upon speaking to Vicente once again, you can tell him the good news about your successful mission.
If completing the quest with the optional objective for not killing any of the Imperial Guard, you'll receive the bonus reward, Scales of Pitiless Justice. Whilst carrying this item, it increases your Strength, Agility, and Intelligence stats by 2, but lowers your Personality by 2.
With another contract done and dusted for the shadowy assassins, feel free to move onto the next quests - be it the optional, The Renegade Shadowscale, or the mainline The Assassinated Man.
