How to start the Lost in the Dunes quest in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
Before beginning this quest, it’s highly recommended that you complete the Riju of Gerudo Town quest first. Even if you don’t finish the entire quest (though finishing is advised as it makes this one easier), you should complete the section where you defend Kara Kara Bazaar from a Gibdo Attack.
Once that is done, head to Kara Kara Bazaar. If you haven't found it yet, the Bazaar lies northeast of Gerudo Town, southwest of Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower, and southeast of Gerudo Highlands Skyview Tower.
We've pinpointed its exact location on the map below, with coordinates for Kara Kara Bazaar being (-3269, -2543, 0023).
Upon reaching the Bazaar, find the two merchants standing outside the General Store at (-3272, -2580, 0023).
Speak with either merchant, and they will tell you that one of them, Ponthos, has been missing since the Gibdo attack. This marks the start of the Lost in the Dunes side quest.
How to find Ponthos in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
To complete the Lost in the Dunes side quest in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you must locate Ponthos who is trapped underground at a place called 'Oasis Source' and then discover a way to rescue them so they can return above ground.
Robsten will inform you that he saw Ponthos exiting through the west entrance (which is the closest exit to the merchant duo currently).
Head out the west entrance and look left. Your compass around your mini-map should indicate you are facing south.
You should see a tall rock formation with a small campfire positioned in front of it.
Proceed to this location and you'll notice a sinkhole surrounded by equipment at (-3357, -2678, 0028).
Jump into the sinkhole and let it pull you down to the lower level. Once you arrive, you’ll be in an area known as 'Oasis Source'.
After landing, follow the path forward and you’ll find Ponthos sitting on the ground. Talk to them and learn that they cannot find a way out—but don't worry, you can help.
How to rescue Ponthos in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
Before proceeding, ensure you have at least one of the following items ready:
- Yunobo's sage ability
- At least four Bomb Flowers
- A Hammer (can be crafted by fusing a rock to a melee weapon—several rocks are scattered near Ponthos.)
With one of the above tools ready, look towards the river to the left of Ponthos. Follow the river but move against the current through the first archway/opening.
Once through, you’ll see the next opening blocked by rocks. Use your chosen method from the list above to clear the obstruction.
In the next chamber, you’ll encounter a blocked entrance at the back and one on the right. Head to the rear entrance and clear it (this should be the one close to or on the riverbank).
Next, you'll enter a slightly larger area. Some Stone Pebblits might attack here, but simply strike them with a hammer or your preferred method of breaking rocks.
Keep following the river upstream, and eventually you’ll come across a ladder. If you’ve already located it, your goal is the Kara Kara Bazaar Well.
When you reach the ladder, Ponthos will appear, express gratitude, and leave. Then climb up the ladder back to the Bazaar and return to the general store to reunite Ponthos with the other merchants to receive your reward.
The reward is a peculiar Orb lying on the ground beside the trio, which will play a key role in the Mysterious Eighth quest available in Gerudo Town.
That concludes this quest! If you feel like taking a break from the Desert, consider tackling Hateno Politics through the Mayoral Election quests. Alternatively, if you'd like to explore how to cook delicious meals, check out our recipes list.
