Transferring save data to Switch 2 is likely to be one of the first, if not the very first, thing you do when you get your brand new console. You can use the save cloud or perform this manually.
There are multiple methods available for transferring Save Data on Switch 2, and the method you choose will depend on what kind of save data you want to move and which games are involved. We'll explain everything in detail below.
With that in mind, here's our guide showing you how to transfer Save Data on Switch 2.
How to transfer Save Data on Switch 2
You can transfer save data on the Switch 2 by uploading it to the Save Data Cloud, sending it directly from one console to another (locally), or by performing a complete system transfer (but there are some important limitations with this last option).
You can learn more about this final choice in our system transfer guide, which also mentions that certain games such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons and titles from the Pokémon series require this method.
Save Data Cloud
You can transfer save data to your Switch 2 by uploading the save data from your original Switch to the Save Data Cloud. This feature is only available if you have an active Nintendo Switch Online Membership.
To access this, go into your system settings and select the 'Data Management' option. Scroll down until you find and select 'Save Data Cloud'.
After selecting this, you’ll be able to view all the games for which you currently have save data and check whether that data has been backed up to the cloud. You can also adjust the settings for a specific game by selecting it from the save data cloud list. (Alternatively, you can do this by highlighting the game on your HOME menu, pressing the button, then choosing the save data cloud and your user profile.)
If you choose to upload the data to the cloud, it will be removed from the original console and stored in the cloud for a limited time (the exact duration will be displayed once you proceed.)
Console to Console
You can also transfer save data to Switch 2 by sending it directly between consoles if they're located in the same room. A Nintendo Switch Online Membership is not required for this method. This can be done if you have another console linked to the same Nintendo Account nearby, meaning your original Switch and Switch 2 must be together during the transfer process.
To begin, ensure that the same User Account is signed in on both the Switch 2 and your original console.
Then, go into the system settings on your Switch 2 and select 'Data Management'. Once inside, scroll down until you locate and click the 'Transfer Your Save Data' option.
Repeat this step on your original Switch console.
Next, on your original Switch, choose the 'Send Save Data To Another Console' option. Then, on your Switch 2, select 'Receive Save Data'.
You can also initiate this process for individual games by highlighting them on the HOME menu, pressing the (plus) button, and selecting 'Transfer Your Save Data' from there.
Complete System Transfer
For games that don't support the save data cloud and if you'd prefer not to transfer each title individually, you can move save data to the Switch 2 via a full system transfer. However, be aware that this will move all current save data from your original Switch to your Switch 2, and for certain games, you won't be able to access that data on your original console anymore — essentially, it deletes all progress from your original Switch and moves it to Switch 2. It will also completely reset your original Switch.
During the process, you will see a list of games whose save data will be transferred to the Switch 2 while being removed from your original console. Some of these games include Animal Crossing: New Horizons and titles from the Pokémon franchise.
