Memory cards for the Switch 2 will allow you to increase your available storage, giving you more space for all the games you purchase — but there are a few important details to be aware of.
Although the Switch 2 already includes 256 GB of internal storage (with part of that allocated for system use), you'll likely find that it's not enough for your collection of games. That's when memory cards become useful.
Without delay, here's our Switch 2 memory cards guide, explaining in detail which memory cards are compatible with the Switch 2.
Which memory cards work with the Switch 2?
The Nintendo Switch 2 is fully compatible only with microSD Express cards (up to 2 TB), which means you can utilize the additional space for storing screenshots, videos, and game saves. You’ll need to perform a system update the first time you insert a microSD Express card. If you plan on downloading many Switch games or prefer keeping your save data on a memory card, this is the best option. Digital Foundry has reviewed the top microSD Express cards for the Switch 2 if you're trying to decide which one to buy.
However, regular microSD cards that don't support microSD Express may still function to some extent but you won't be able to store full games on them. That’s why we advise going with microSD Express cards. With a standard microSD card, you’ll only be able to copy over video clips and screenshots from your Switch (no room for full game installations).
Additionally, at the time of writing, it appears that using a microSD card previously used with a Nintendo Switch console in your new Switch 2 won't let you load or save digital games and save files. This might mean you have to transfer any digital games and save data to the internal storage of the new console before using them.
