With iPhone 18, Apple will continue its streak of losing its identity
Jun 20, 2025 pm 03:27 PMAs far back as I can recall, the iPhone has always been a highly recognizable gadget worldwide. Apple holds an impressive reputation, and whether you're a fan or not, any attention contributes to the iPhone's popularity. However, with the upcoming iPhone 18, I believe Apple will continue a direction it intends to take this year with the soon-to-be-released iPhone 17 series.
iPhone 17 will abandon its iconic design
If you’ve followed smartphone developments, you likely know that it’s nearly confirmed the iPhone 17 Pro will have a redesigned exterior. Both the iPhone 17 Pro Max and standard Pro models are expected to feature a significantly larger rear camera module. Apple is likely to claim this enhances photography by relocating the flash away from the sensors.
Doesn’t this design seem somewhat familiar? Just look at the iPhone 17 Air and you might wonder if it's actually a Google Pixel 9. Indeed, the iPhone 17 will depart from its well-known aesthetic, opting for a new appearance that has received mixed reactions online since its initial leak.
I’m torn about this change. On one side, it’s time for the iPhone to sport a fresh style. Yet, on the other hand, this new design won’t be nearly as distinguishable from afar as the previous one. The iPhone 17 will resemble Pixel phones so closely that Apple is practically squandering the recognition it has built up.
And this trend will persist with the iPhone 18 in 2026.
iPhone 18 will adopt a punch hole
There have been numerous reports previously suggesting the iPhone 18 will incorporate a punch hole design for its display. Now, a highly credible insider connected to the supply chain has verified this. The iPhone 18 will move Face ID beneath the screen, while the front-facing camera will reside behind a punch hole.
This sets the stage for the iPhone 20 — Apple may skip the iPhone 19 — in 2027, marking the 20th anniversary of this legendary product. For that model, the company reportedly plans to unveil an entirely new Pro variant featuring glass all across the front and sides. There will be no bezels and no cutouts on the screen, as all components (including the camera) will be relocated under the display.
As excited as I am about that, the iPhone 18 will be a tough sell for anyone who values having a distinctive phone.
Pixel? Samsung? What exactly is it?
The iPhone 18 will be unidentifiable from the front and perplexing from the back. If rumors about a punch hole positioned on one side of the screen hold true, then the iPhone 18 will resemble an outdated budget Android device.
Whatever you think of the Dynamic Island, it was unmistakably unique. Personally, I really appreciated what Apple did with it. As someone who has always disliked notches and punch holes, the Dynamic Island transformed an irritating aspect of modern smartphones into something clever. Reverting to an outdated approach that offers nothing special is…an unusual decision.
It’s unfortunate too, because by the time the iPhone 18 launches, Apple Intelligence might offer a solid suite of AI tools. The iPhone 18 will also be the first Apple phone to utilize a 2 nm processor: the A20 chip. But with such an identity issue, I’d prefer to wait for its follow-up.
Alternatively, if everything proceeds as planned, the rumored foldable iPhone will also debut in 2026. To me, that sounds like a much more distinctive option than the iPhone 18. Of course, assuming it doesn’t cost both my kidneys.### Do you plan on purchasing an iPhone 18?
