A Shift Away From the Crossover Approach of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart World, the newest entry in Nintendo's long-running racing series, distinguishes itself from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe by reducing the number of non-Mario characters.

In an interview with producer Kosuke Yabuki, it was explained that the creative direction for Mario Kart World centers around a more unified Mario-centric world, emphasizing cohesiveness and depth rather than including characters from other universes.

"From our perspective as developers, adding characters from different games didn’t feel right within this world. It also didn’t seem necessary when we already have so much potential with Mario characters."

Yabuki, a long-time director of the franchise, has worked on Mario Kart titles since the Wii era. He directed Mario Kart 7 for the 3DS, Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U, and later supervised its enhanced version on the Switch.

Mario Kart World ### Most Characters Ever in a Mario Kart Title

Despite excluding characters from other games, Mario Kart World still offers a robust and memorable lineup. At launch, there are 50 playable racers. Returning favorites such as Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Bowser, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong (with a fresh design), are joined by new faces like the Dolphin from Whirlpool Lagoon and the Cow from Moo Moo Meadows.

"We're always curious how players will respond to the character selection. But with so many characters and costume options, we believe every player will find something they enjoy."

Yabuki added that the reception to the new characters has been positive. The team had hoped these additions would be a nice surprise, but the enthusiastic response went beyond what they anticipated.

When asked which new racer he personally liked the most, Yabuki mentioned that his preference aligned with many fans online.

"To clarify, just because I like them doesn’t mean they’re the strongest in terms of stats," Yabuki began, "but considering how warmly they’ve been received, I have to say it’s the Cow."
