Throughout your adventures in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, you’ll encounter various activities beyond slaying monsters. Similar to most RPGs, Tainted Grail includes the ability to go fishing. Here, you can acquire a fishing rod and try to catch as many fish as you can carry, filling out your journal and keeping track of your records.

However, you won’t be able to start fishing immediately. While bait or lures aren't required, you'll first need to locate a fishing rod to begin. This guide will show you two ways to obtain a fishing rod early on in the game.

How to Obtain a Fishing Rod

Discovering One in the World

There are several methods for obtaining a fishing rod in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, but one option becomes available very early in the story—and it's completely free. After shipwrecking in the Horns of the South, look immediately to your left to find a small island featuring ancient structures that appear quite ominous. You may either cross the bridge from above or swim to reach it.

Upon arrival, you’ll face some undead enemies that must be dealt with before entering the structure. Inside, you’ll find several locked cells, one of which is already broken open, leading to a small drop into water. Enter this cell to discover a box located at the back. Inside, you’ll find a fishing rod along with some fish.

Purchasing from a Merchant

If returning to the beginning of the map doesn't appeal to you, another way to get a fishing rod is by buying it from a merchant. It won’t be found with alchemists or blacksmiths, who don’t stock them, but general stores might. The first such merchant you’ll encounter is Orlaith’s located within the Horns of the South settlement early in the story. She offers a fishing rod for just eight gold coins. Although eight coins may seem expensive at first, you can easily recover the cost by pickpocketing NPCs or selling your catches later.

What to do with a Fishing Rod?

Although a fishing rod isn't a flashy new sword or magical artifact, it serves as a valuable tool for discovering unique items in lakes and oceans. While its primary use is to relax and collect fish, you can also compete with yourself to see what size fish you can reel in.

Additionally, there's a side quest titled 120 Days of Herring and Cheese that requires using the fishing rod to catch a specific type of fish. Fortunately, this particular fish is easier to catch than others, making it more of an introduction to the fishing mechanic rather than a challenge.
