Windows 11 will let you change on-screen indicators position, like volume flyout
Jun 28, 2025 am 12:54 AMA new toggle labeled “position of on-screen indicators” is being introduced in Windows 11 24H2 and newer versions, including Windows Server 2025. Thanks to this addition, users will gain the ability to adjust where volume and brightness notifications appear, as they are currently fixed at the bottom of the screen.
In Windows 10, on-screen indicators typically show up in the top-left corner. This includes the volume indicator that appears when adjusting sound levels or muting the audio. Similarly, the brightness overlay also appears in the top-left.
With the release of Windows 11, Microsoft relocated all these indicators to the bottom of the display, removed media preview elements, and embraced a more minimalistic look.
The current bottom placement works well—it doesn’t take up much space while still serving its purpose effectively as an indicator. Still, some users may prefer having them appear elsewhere. Microsoft is currently testing this functionality in Windows Server Build 26433, which confirms it will be part of Windows 11 24H2.
As noted by user Phantom on X, the company has subtly included a new “position of on-screen indicators” toggle under Settings > System > Notifications.
From there, you can enable the “Position of on-screen indicators” toggle and choose between Top left, Top center, or Bottom center—offering less intrusive positioning depending on what you're doing.
However, there’s no option to move the overlay to the left side of the screen. Will that change later? Probably not. Microsoft likely avoids placing indicators on the left to prevent overlap with the Start menu when it's aligned to that side.
This might be why the company chooses not to place indicators along the left (middle) portion of the display.
Dear Microsoft, please let us reposition the taskbar
It’s surprising that we’re getting an option to change the location of on-screen indicators before being allowed to move the taskbar. But then again, this is Microsoft—perhaps we shouldn’t be too shocked anymore.
Don’t misunderstand me—I welcome additional customization options like anyone else. It just feels strange that so much user feedback about the taskbar continues to go unaddressed. You still can’t shift the taskbar to the top, left, or right edge of the screen without relying on third-party tools, which rarely offer a seamless or stable solution.
I won’t turn this into an extended complaint about Microsoft. So I’ll ask—what other features do you think should have a toggle of their own? Let me know in the comments below.
