Persona 5: The Phantom X lets you experience the life of Wonder, the leader of a new group of Phantom Thieves who try to obtain seven treasures and change the hearts of some of the worst possible villains they could encounter. But along the way, numerous folks will show the support foe this group of benevolent heroes.
Alongside the Phantom Thieves, this game has a large variety of characters to include in your party, called Phantom Idols, each one with different roles they can fulfill in combat. However, not all of them are equally strong, and since some are more useful than others, we separated them into different tiers so you can know beforehand.
How Do Tiers Work?
We're using four tiers for our list, and each category denotes a level of usability for the characters in it. Here are all our tiers:
- S Tier: Characters that either excel in their roles or bring a level of versatility that makes them a staple in any team comp.
- A Tier: Here go the characters that can provide a top-tier performance under the right circumstances and with the right teammates.
- B Tier: Average characters that might find use from time to time, but are unlikely.
- C Tier: These characters are not advisable to use if you want to progress through the game unless you have no other choice.
S Tier Characters
Phantom Thief/Idol |
Role |
Description |
---|---|---|
Joker - Ren Amamiya |
Sweeper | By far one of the best DPS units in the game, Joker excels in combat, since he can get extra turns under the right conditions, and even boost the damage during those. |
Wonder - Main Character/Nagisa Kamishiro |
Assassin | While you don't have an option not to use Wonder as a character, he still has access to the Wild Card ability, and being able to equip three personas makes him the most versatile character in the game. |
Rin - Yaoling Li |
Saboteur | Rin is the best debuffer character in the roster, and the fact that she can prevent enemies from using their skills makes her a great asset in any team. |
Mona - Morgana |
Medic | As healers go in this game, Mona is the best, thanks to his ability to resurrect characters, making him a valuable supporter for a lot of teams. |
A Tier Characters
Phantom Thief/Idol |
Role |
Description |
---|---|---|
Panther - Ann Takamaki |
Sweeper | Ann is the best Fire damage character, and her skills allow her to hit numerous enemies at once, which is incredibly helpful no matter the context, but even more so with more Fire-type teammates. |
Cattle - Lufel |
Medic | Just as Ann is the best Fire-type DPS, she needs a Fire-type unit that can support her, and Cattle is exactly that, a healer that can support any team, but excels even more in an element-focused environment. |
Leon - Leo Kamiyama |
Strategist | Easily the best Nuclear damage unit, Leon will give a wide variety of buffs to the party, making him an invaluable support unit in almost any team. |
Skull - Ryuji Sakamoto |
Assassin | Ryuji's DPS potential is only inferior to the other Phantom Thieves, and the more he gets hit, the more damage he will inflict, so you must resort to Physical skills if you want to manipulate those odds. |
Puppet - Miyu Sahara |
Navigator | Puppet provides the best shields and defense buffs, which makes her a great unit for battles with multiple phases and sturdy boss enemies. |
Okyann - Kayo Tomiyama |
Navigator | Okyann is the best Navigator in the game, as she can provide buffs on Attack and SP recovery, which is immensely useful for team compositions that rely on elemental damage. |
Fleuret - Seiji Shiratori |
Assassin | Fleuret is currently the only Wind DPS in the roster, so you must rely on him to inflict that type of damage. If you combine him with Mona to properly trigger some Windswept status, you won't regret it. |
Soy - Shun Kano |
Guardian | Soy is the best tank character in the whole roster, as not only does he get good damage reduction, but he also can recover HP, which makes him an overall well-rounded character. |
B Tier Characters
Phantom Thief/Idol |
Role |
Description |
---|---|---|
Riddle - Haruna Nishimori |
Strategist | Riddle is a great supporter unit that can provide different buffs on healing, damage increase, and shields, which allows her to empower any character effectively. |
Mont - Kotone Montagne |
Assassin | Kotone is a decent Ice-type DPS character, but with so little variety regarding Ice units, she doesn't have the time to shine unless it's against weak enemies. However, this could change as we get more characters, so it's good to keep her in mind. |
Closer - Motoha Arai |
Sweeper | Motoha can inflict some good Electric damage in area, which is especially helpful in the early stages of the game (and particularly during the first palace), and even though she gets overshadowed by other characters, she's still worth your time. |
C Tier Characters
Phantom Thief/Idol |
Role |
Description |
---|---|---|
Sepia - Toshiya Sumi |
Assassin | As a Curse DPS user, Sepia might be a good alternative if you didn't get Joker, but with so many better alternatives to use, unless you want to specifically inflict Curse damage, he's not worth building. |
Key - Kiyoshi Kurotani |
Saboteur | Key might be a decent supporter in Fire-type teams, but outside of that, he won't find too much use. |
Moko - Tomoko Noge |
Strategist | Tomoko is overpowered in terms of buffing abilities by literally any other character, so do not use this character unless you have no other choice. |
Yuki - Yukimi Fujikawa |
Guardian | Yuki could be a great Guardian unit, as she provides a solid Shield to one unit, but that shield will be granted randomly, which makes her too much of a liability to invest further. |
