For Mac users who are also sports enthusiasts, there’s a handy little free application known as MenuScores. This app displays the game of your choice directly in the menu bar, making it easy to monitor scores or upcoming game times with just a glance. It’s straightforward, minimalistic, and not overcomplicated—just live sports updates right on your Mac's menu bar. If this sounds useful, feel free to download the app for your Mac, set your favorite match, and you're good to go.
- Get MenuScores from GitHub here
If you're unfamiliar with GitHub, downloading an app from there might seem a bit confusing at first, so here's a quick guide to help you through the process.
After installing MenuScores, when you try to open it, you’ll likely encounter the standard Gatekeeper warning stating that the app can’t be opened. To fix this, navigate to System Settings > Privacy & Security > scroll all the way down, then click “Open Anyway” to override Gatekeeper restrictions.
Now all you need to do is select the game you want to follow, and that’s all!
The selected game will now appear in your Mac’s menu bar, letting you keep track of the score while working on your computer.
Pretty convenient, right?
I can't find the MenuScores icon in the menu bar!
If you don’t see the MenuScores item in your menu bar, chances are your menu bar is too crowded. On Notch-equipped Macs, this issue arises quite easily due to limited space. You may need to remove or disable some menu bar items. Most icons can be removed by simply holding Command and dragging them off the menu bar. However, removing certain icons like the Shortcuts menu can be tricky—you may have to disable them within their respective apps.
Which Sports and Leagues Does MenuScores Support?
MenuScores provides coverage for games and scores across MLB, NHL, NBA, NFL, NCAA FOOTBALL, NCAA BASKETBALL, F1, PGA, LGA, WNBA, UEFA, EPL, ESP, GER, ITA, NLL, and potentially more leagues in future updates.
Personally, I use it mainly for MLB games now, but I expect to get even more value out of it during college football season. No matter which sport or league you follow, you'll probably appreciate having this free app on your Mac.
I came across this tool while searching for a simple way to view real-time scores on my Mac, so a big thanks to Justin Potts from Lifehacker for highlighting this useful utility.
