The weekend has finally arrived, and whether you're looking to kick off your relaxation or unwind after a hectic day, here is the Connections answer for 12th July.
If you're new to the game, Connections presents you with a set of 16 words, and your task is to sort them into four groups based on shared themes or connections. These links could be anything—similar meanings, parts of a phrase, items found in a specific location, or more abstract associations!
Despite seeming straightforward, Connections features varying levels of difficulty: Yellow is the easiest, while Purple is the most challenging. That’s why figuring out today’s Connections answer might be a bit of a brain teaser. One group might click instantly, while another leaves you scratching your head. That’s where we come in!
Connections was first developed during The New York Times’ annual game jam event, with its beta version launching in June 2023. It has since become one of the publication's most-loved games, second only to Wordle. Some have even drawn comparisons to the BBC's puzzle show Only Connect...

- Blue - A defined duration or span.

Connections answer for 12th July
Here’s today’s Connections solution:
- Support - Back, Champion, Second, Support
- Detailed - Elaborate, Minute, Particular, Thorough
- Time Span - Age, Day, Period, Time
- NATO Alphabet Words - Echo, Kilo, Uniform, Victor
This one definitely gave me a bit of trouble. I quickly figured out the yellow and blue groups, but green and purple had me stuck for a while. Looking back, I probably should’ve recognized the purple group since the NATO phonetic alphabet is something I’ve encountered before. Oh well—there’s always tomorrow!
What to play after Connections?
The natural next step is Wordle, but if you’ve already completed that for the day, The New York Times offers a variety of other games. For word enthusiasts, there’s the Mini Crossword, Spelling Bee, Letter Boxed, and Strands, which is still in beta. If you'd like to switch things up, Tiles—a tile-matching game—or the classic Sudoku are great options.
Outside of The NYTimes, you can try Semantle, where the goal is to reach a secret word not by spelling, but by understanding its meaning through semantic similarity. Another option is Puzzgrid, which offers hundreds of puzzles in a format similar to Connections, but with a 3-minute time limit per puzzle.
(And of course, you can always catch up on Only Connect via BBC iPlayer...)
If you're feeling more like reading, we’ve covered why The NYTimes Mini Crossword remains a daily delight and sat down with Jonathan Knight, The NYTimes' Head of Games.
Best of luck with today's Connections!
