In Oblivion's optional quest, The Battle for Castle Kvatch, you'll be tasked with aiding the efforts in the city of Kvatch to drive back the demonic forces that overwhelmed the city.
This occurs after completing Breaking the Siege of Kvatch, where you successfully closed an Oblivion Gate and began reclaiming the area.
As part of this remastered quest, you'll need to open the Guard House and gain entry to Kvatch Castle, where you'll proceed to assault the grounds and retrieve the Colovian Signet Ring.
For the full list of main quests and additional guides, be sure to consult our Oblivion walkthrough.
Here's what you need to do on this page:
- Talk to Matius and engage in combat outside Castle Kvatch
- Locate Berich Inian and unlock the Kvatch Guard House
- Enter Kvatch Castle to find Ormellius Goldwine
- Deliver the Colovian Signet Ring to Matius
Talk to Matius and battle outside Castle Kvatch
Once you've accepted the quest and are prepared to start, you can speak to Savlian Matius. After agreeing to go ahead, follow him outside the chapel to fend off more Daedra.
Engage in combat with Matius across the courtyard until all enemies are defeated and he speaks to you again.
At this point, he'll inform you that you cannot proceed further since the gate to the castle is locked and can only be opened from the other side. From here, he directs you to find Berich Inian, who possesses the key to the Guard House.
To locate Berich, follow your map marker to their location—most likely back inside the chapel you recently exited. Return there to find him.
Berich Inian and unlocking the Kvatch Guard House
Upon entering the Chapel of Akatosh, search for Berich near the stairs heading down.
Explain the situation to him, but as you discover, he won't hand over the key easily and insists on accompanying you to the Guard House.
After your discussion, you may be interrupted by an Imperial Legion Soldier offering to join you, and you must accept—these soldiers will assist you through the next few sections.
Following that conversation, follow Berich down the stairs and through the door on the right leading to the Chapel Undercroft.
Through these next areas, you'll fight various Daedra alongside Berich and the Imperial Soldiers who joined you. Keep eliminating them and following Berich, through the undercroft, back outside, and to a trapdoor down to the Castle Kvatch Passageway.
Once through, your quest will update, and it's mostly a direct path up to a ladder leading into the Guard House. Climb up here, and you'll exit into the Guard House.
At the opposite end, up some stairs, you'll be able to interact with the Gate Lever to open the gates and let Matius and his group of soldiers join you in battling various Daedric Scamps. Your quest will update as soon as you've raised the gate.
Clearing out all the enemies here will station Savlian Matius and his group outside the castle. Contrary to expectations, it's up to you to enter with the Imperial soldiers while they wait outside.
Approach the front gate and enter the Kvatch Castle Great Hall.
Enter Kvatch Castle to find Count Ormellius Goldwine
This next segment is solely your responsibility, along with any remaining Imperial soldier companions. Similar to the previous areas, it's relatively straightforward, but there are extra paths and rooms to explore if desired.
Of course, you're free to take your time and investigate what you can find, but our primary goal is to eliminate the enemies and ultimately locate the Count, Ormellius Goldwine.
Through each room, you'll encounter various Scamps to fight as before.
First, you'll traverse this hallway, ascend the stairs at the back end of the room—above the throne—and pass through the doorway at the back to enter the Great Hall.
Inside, you'll face more enemies and witness further destruction as you search for survivors. Following the left wall, you can find a path that leads around to the Count's Quarters.
It's once you reach this room that you spot a Scamp near the body of Ormellius Goldwine—defeat them, and then examine the Count's body.
Interacting with Ormellius' body will trigger a quest update highlighting your next task, which is to collect his signet ring—interact with his body again and take the Colovian Signet Ring, which you'll bring back to Matius.

Deliver the Colovian Signet Ring to Matius
Returning outside, speaking to Savlian Matius allows you to report back on the events—your dialogue choices will affect his response, but regardless of what you say, you'll still be able to hand over the ring and finish the quest.
Not only that, but you'll also receive a Kvatch Cuirass as a reward from Matius. This particular armor comes with additional bonuses, such as Fortify Endurance and Strength.
