How to Cancel Automatic Install of iOS & iPadOS Updates
Jul 08, 2025 am 12:57 AMYou may already know that iOS and iPadOS will try to automatically install system software updates on your devices. But not everyone wants to use this feature all the time.
If you accidentally scheduled an overnight update on your iPhone or iPad, you might be looking to cancel this automatic installation, whether you don’t want your device to be interrupted at night, or if you'd prefer to wait for the update or install it manually later. Fortunately, you can cancel this iOS or iPadOS update by adjusting your settings.
Keep reading to find out how you can cancel automatic installation of iOS and iPadOS software updates on your iPhone and iPad.
How to Cancel Auto-Update Install of iOS & iPadOS Updates
Canceling auto-installation of software updates is quite straightforward if you're using a device running iOS 14/iPadOS 14 or newer. Please note that you need to have a scheduled update in place to access this specific option we’re about to cover.
- Go to “Settings” from the home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
- In the Settings app, scroll down and tap on “General” to proceed.
- Here, tap on the “Software Update” option found just above the AirDrop setting.
- Now, you should see the version of the iOS/iPadOS update that’s set to be installed. Tap on “Automatic Updates” to continue.
- Here, tap the “Install iOS Updates” toggle.
- You'll now see two options available. Select “Cancel Install Tonight” if you simply wish to stop the scheduled overnight update while keeping automatic updates enabled.
That’s all. Your iPhone or iPad won't attempt to update during the night anymore.
Since automatic updates are still enabled, you might get a similar pop-up within a day or two. This time, instead of entering your passcode, tap on the “Remind Me Later” option below the keypad to avoid scheduling another update.
To prevent these update notifications altogether, you’ll need to disable automatic updates.
Another method to keep your device from starting an update at night is ensuring it's not connected to power. Remember, automatic updates only happen when your iPhone or iPad is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. Keep in mind that the settings discussed here don’t prevent software updates from being downloaded automatically to your device. One drawback to this approach is that your device won't be charging while unused overnight.
If your device is running an older version of iOS or iPadOS, you won’t find all these options in the settings menu. However, you can still cancel a scheduled update by disabling automatic updates entirely from the same section. Also, if you’ve paired an Apple Watch with your iPhone, you may want to consider turning off automatic watchOS updates as well.
Usually, iOS and iPadOS updates take around 20-40 minutes to complete, though major updates can take longer. If you often use your iPhone or iPad late at night while lying in bed—for texting friends, watching videos, or listening to music—you wouldn’t want an update interrupting your activity. With automatic updates enabled, sometimes you receive a prompt asking you to update. If you select “Later” instead of “Install Now,” you'll be asked to enter your passcode. Doing so schedules an overnight update.
We hope you managed to stop your iPhone or iPad from updating during the night. Did this help resolve the issue? Have you decided to turn off automatic updates completely for the same reason? Feel free to share your experiences and thoughts in the comments below.
